This was an important custom of the Jewish religion. It was also customary for a wealthy family to bring a lamb and a young pigeon or turtle dove to be sacrificed. Poorer families, however, were permitted to offer two pigeons or two turtle doves for the offering. When the Holy Family arrived at the Temple, they were greeted by a just and pious man named Simeon." Grace Lines [lhlaweb@lhla.ccsend.com] Scripture tells us that, Simeon took Jesus in his arms and praised God, saying:

29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
you may now dismiss[c] your servant in peace.
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,
31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”

33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
Many of us meditate on this joyful mystery thinking about how these words brought with them the first of Our Lady's sufferings and yet this scripture is part of the Joyful mysteries of the Holy Rosary. We are being called to reflect on the power of Joy that God gave Mary in this moment. Could it be that Mary's Joy in this moment, when she saw Simeon give witness that her son was indeed the messiah ,outweighed her sorrow. Mary suffered so many trials. She must of been more than a positve thinker to overcome so many sorrows. The joy of Lord was her strength. Can we say the same? I pray that when we see difficulties and challenges we would remember to look seek the Joy of the Lord and the good in everything. Dear Lord help us to follow the example of Mary. May the joy of the Lord be our Strength.

Pray Always

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 158px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9lnbYOZS_Ew/TyiopU5T99I/AAAAAAAAAQA/T-9mJH6fxL4/s200/mary7.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703994356001929170" />
Pray everyday and when you pray ask Mary, the Mother of Jesus to pray with you.
When you approach the throne of God in Prayer, with our Lady,it is very powerful.
Why?
Because she never denied God anything. (Matthew 2:1-12 )
How we all long to experience an epiphany with God! But are we willing to recognize that it takes time and work? In order to find Christ, the Three Kings and the Shepherds had to engage in a journey which involved time, sacrifice, faith and trials. Are we willing, like the Wiseman, to sacrifice in order to prepare our hearts for Christ?
Like the wisemen we have been given a star to guide us; The light of the church is there to guide us to Christ, who is waiting for us in the tabernacle and in the Sacraments. How will we respond to the Good News of Christmas? Can we respond with the shepherds, who upon hearing the Good News said: "Let us go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."?
The good news is Jesus is in the Tabernacle in our Catholic Churches. Let us go to Eucahristic Adoration and SEE.
The celebration of the magi's encounter with the living God, our Lord Jesus Christ. He came to us as a little baby. He wants to be so approachable. Who would be afraid to approach a little baby? This little baby, who was the king of kings born in poverty and laid in a manger, a feeding trouth accessible to all is calling you. Will you answer his call? Will you make time to be with Him?
The three kings were not afraid to answer his call and they were humble enough to lay prostrate before Him. If we read the account of their journey to find Jesus, we will find that they had to travel through the darkness to find Christ. It took perverance and obedience. It wasn't easy and they had to overcome their fears. They had to trust in the heavens to guide them. Let us pray that we will be like them. They say that wisemen seek him.
Deuteronomy 4:29 The lord says..
But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul. jdandrow

Friendship withChrist

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 127px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GbDkb8DJp_g/TwbnrwyEJiI/AAAAAAAAAPE/FhPqrJC1rMU/s200/passion%2Bof%2BChrist%2Blast%2Bsupper.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5694493517871851042" />
A penitent said to St. Pio of Pietrelcina, "Padre, today they say the Rosary is out of date, that it is no longer in fashion. Praying a lot may seem difficult until we realize that one way to pray is to simply speak and listen to God.
Talk to God not only as if He is the Almighty but also as if he is a friend, because He is.
John 15:15 “ I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you”. New International Version(©1984) Do we treat Christ as He treats us, as friends? Do we take the time to tell Him everything, and to concern ourselves with His concerns? Do we spend time with Him or just sit with him out of obligation? Do we Take time for silence and to be still and to Listen to His voice in prayer
He has so much He wants to give our world and our world rejects Him. Let’s make time today to show Him we are different. We will not take His friendship and sufferings for granted. We can do that by reflecting on this scripture , or praying a Rosary or doing something kind in His name, something more. Let’s pray for the healing our world needs and that we personally need to be more aware of His friendship and to be faithful to Him. The church invites us to see that it is a life like John the Baptist, dependent on the power of the Holy Spirit and trusting in completely in God. The way of the Lord is one that makes the time to set oneself apart from the world to spend time resting with God.
It is the way of being open to His will and the work of salvation in our souls. It is the Way of faith, hope and love. Advent is a great time to take a few minutes extra minutes to respond to Jesus’s call to come to Him and find rest. A few minutes reading the Psalms or visiting the Blessed Sacrament,or going to Confession are great ways to prepare for the coming of the Lord and to find rest for your soul.

Christmas Joy

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 187px; height: 139px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mX28iPDZE04/TtjqqmS1prI/AAAAAAAAAO4/GNksgdjsb10/s200/nativity.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5681548947482846898" />
I was listening to a priest preaching about the Gospel today. He spoke of how we belong to Christ. I found myself asking the question, “Today did I act like I really believe that we belong to Christ or did I behave as if I belong only to this world?" Today, Am I living like I believe that I am His, bought with the sacrifice of His life, the shedding of His precious blood. Am I living in the joy of knowing that God is my Father, I am not alone, and I am a child of the King. Can I take a moment to rest in the joy of knowing that Christ came to a tiny, dirty stable in Bethlehem? He accepted all its imperfections for love of me and You. ..I don’t want to be so busy with life that I don't rest in that knowledge so as to let it permeate all that I do. Come Holy Spirit, lead us this Advent to Bethlehem where we can encounter Christ in a Spirit of Joy and contemplation. Deliver us from the spirit of consumerism and restlessness. May the heart of the infant Jesus move our hearts to joy and peace overflowing?
Like the centurion we can pray, Lord I do believe, please help our unbelief that we may receive and live out the joy, and the graces you have won for us. It came at a time when I decided I needed to seek God for guidance and
it is a scripture that I prayed daily for years. It is a powerful meditation.
After praying it for some time I realized that in order to trust God or anyone like this you need to get to know them first. It made me realize how little I knew God, but the fact that He is infinite did not stop me from trying. After all He died for me and invites us every day to seek Him. As I prayed this scripture,I was led to ask God to help me know Him and love Him better. I prayed for faith and God answered my prayer. In answer to my prayer He first filled me with a love for His Word(the Bible),a love for the Sacraments and an understanding of the power of the Rosary. God our father has not left us orphans. He wants to lead and guide us but to be led we need to be humble. We need to seek and to ask. The scriptures.. "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."Jeremiah 29:13 and Pslam 32:8 "I will teach you and instruct you in the way that you should go,I will counsel you with my loving eye on you." Psalm 32 reminds me of this. God does not disappoint....Romans 5:5 "And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us." . In the Mass and the scriptures we can experience this personally and grow to know love and trust Him more. One either moves forward or backward. The disciples were witness of one of the greatest signs and wonders in scripture, the resurrection and ascension of Jesus into Heaven. I imagine it would have been an easy thing for them to remain there looking up at the sky recalling the great vision of Jesus they had seen, consoling one another and rejoicing. But instead, prompted by the angels they returned to Jerusalem and acted on what they had seen and believed.
When we experience Christ and His Glory it is natural to want to remain focused on those moments of mystery and power but Christ calls us to give what we have recieved. We are called to move forward in faith and in the power of His Spirit so as to give witness to the truth that He is Risen.
Dear Jesus, Faith without works is dead. It is hard to ask for the virtue of humility. Maybe this is because the word congers up visions of past humiliations and the fear of more to come. I was glad to of been told that Humility doesn't ask us to think badly of ourselves. Real humility is an honest recognition of ones strengths and weaknesses in the light of Christ's love for us.It calls us to trust in Him and to give thanks to Him in a way that draws us closer to all that is good. Real humility can lead to true contrition and it empowers us to live in the peace and freedom of Christ. Remembering that makes it easier for me to pray for this most foundational of all virtues. Dear Lord, We pray for the light we need to recognize our sins, our strenghts and our weaknesses. We pray for the virtue of humility. We pray this lent for true contrition for our sins and the grace to overcome obstacles that keep us from going to confession, your Sacrament of Mercy. It is a simple yet life changing thought that when you give people your time, you give them your life. How great it was to be reminded that when you pay attention to someone and look them in the eye, you are saying, “You matter to me. You are valuable.” Sometimes it feels like we can not make a difference but Moms, children, dads and all the laity can remember that everyday, when we take the time to listen and pay attention to the needs of others, we are part of Christ's salvic mission. How can we treat others like they matter. We can treat others like they really matter when we are convinced that we really matter to God.Luke12: 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. The sacrifices of fasting and self-denial are only means and signs of this spiritual penance. If people understand this well, they will not put the main effort in Lent on technical feats of abstaining from pleasures (which sometimes make them proud or vain), but in sincere contrition, prayer and humble fight against their faults.” Fr. Francis X. Weiser S.J
The observance of Lent is the very badge of Christian warfare. By it we prove ourselves not to be enemies of the cross of Christ. By it we avert the scourges of divine justice. By it we gain strength against the princes of darkness, for it shields us with heavenly help. Should mankind grow remiss in their observance of Lent, it would be a detriment to God’s glory, a disgrace to the Catholic religion, and a danger to Christian souls.
But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul. jdandrow

WISHING YOU A BLESSED NEW YEAR

"...so as one year ends and another begins, never forget that you are a child of God. We all can relate to this, after all, it almost sounds like a modern day at the mall during Advent.
Mary's and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem included not only joy but frustration, rejection, poverty, and trials.
But then there was that “Silent Night” when the heavens were opened and the Christ child was revealed to the world.
And yes, there was the Epiphany!

JOY

"Only When God is seen does life truly begin. The nurse had to ask my about my symptoms and med. history. Upon telling her she looked at me in amazement and was speechless. I asked her what was wrong and she said that she sees people every day and hears their stories. Having heard mine she knows that I have been through hell and that I should be miserable like the rest of her clients. She shared how she was amazed at the peace and positive attitude I have. She asked me how that could be. She did not know tht my strength comes from knowing that Christ is going through this with me and that my hope is in Him.
I was able to share with her how God gives me strength, that my peace comes from my faith in God but more importantly from the grace to exercise my faith every day. Faith isn't always easy and fighting the temptation to feel sorry for ourselves is hard for everyone. For me it is easier when I depend on the Sacraments and God's word. I could see that she believed in God but did not know how to put her faith in to practice. She did not know how to trust him.
Trust comes from building relationship. It takes work. It is not easy to read scripture every day, pray the Rosary daily or make Mass as often as possible but neither is it easy for an athlete to work out every day. But like the athlete who knows he has muscles and also knows that having muscles is simply not enough; we have faith and we must know that that is not enough. We have to exercise our faith daily, in good times and in bad, through commitment to prayer and service. The athlete knows that he has to exercise his muscles in order for them to be a blessing to him and others. The Christian needs to persevere in the same way, excercising his or her sprititual muscles through practicing ones faith.

If you feel like God is not hearing your prayers, persevere. Make a commitment to seeking him in His Word, the Sacraments, and in prayer. Don't wait until a trial comes to grow strong in the Lord. Seek him now and grow strong now so that when the trial comes it does not take you by surprise and you will stand ready to fight with faith, hope and love.
Back to the Nurse and her inability to cope with her own difficulties and the suffering she sees every day.
She kept asking me about my testimony and I shared it with her. God touched her heart. It was a beautiful thing to see that the way God blessed me in my sufferings (with God's grace) gave her joy and the faith to persevere.
Dear Lord Help us to be instruments of faith, hope and love and to the truth that you will never leave us nor forsake us but that you will work all things together for good for those who love you. Should we in our weakness despair help us to persevere. Without you and your grace we can do nothing. Glorify your name and deliver us from every evil. Amen
Jeremiah 29:13
You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

Don't Quote Me on Laughter

You can turn painful situations around through laughter. He said that some souls, if it is possible Jesus loves more. I disagree.
He said this in an effort to explain the mystery of why some suffer more than others.
First of all, who can measure how much suffering each one of us has? Impossible.
Secondly, Peter and Jon were called to be set apart at least twice; Once when they climbed the mount of transfiguration, where they received the great consolation of seeing Christ in his divinity, and then again in the garden of Gethsemane where they witnessed his agony.
They were close to him both in his sufferings and in His Glory.
Christ loves all and calls some to be closer to him than others. Those who are closer may experience His sufferings more readily but they also experience his joys and glories in greater ways. Good always conquers evil.
It serves us well to remember that there were two people crucified with Christ. One chose to be angry and bitter, but the other chose to accept it and in doing so he heard the voice of His savior promise him paradise.JD

Grace

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_umFHrXUZz2s/TAnDc4vjm_I/AAAAAAAAAHg/DREyLtRmsPs/s200/west_mauis.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479125322708524018" />
I heard someone say today that God will give the grace that you need for today.
Don't worry about what might happen tomorrow. He thirsts for you.
He loves you always, even when you don't feel worthy.
When not accepted by others, even by yourself sometimes,
He is the one who always accepts you.
Only believe, you are precious to him.
Bring all you are suffering to His feet,
only open your heart to be loved by Him as you are.
He will do the rest.
- Mother Teresa, 1910-1997 For more see side bar

Don't Quote Me - Mother Theresa

"If I can give you any advice, I beg you to get closer to the Eucharist and to Jesus... "When we are judging others, we have no time to love them."
~Mother Theresa
This is a great quote although it does not exclude the fact that we
are called in the Gospel to discern, and choose between good and evil.
That being said, we can reflect on how
during Holy week we witness our Lord Jesus being judged and crucified.
He did not judge those who judged him. He prayed for them.
"Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do."
Gospel of Luke 23:34 Have I done the same?
Dear Lord, Help me to know truth and to defend truth, to discern between good and evil. When others bear false witness against us help me to know when to speak and when to be silent. Help me to pray for my persecutors with a great trust in God's providential care for me and for those who hurt us. Nothing is more dead than faith without works (Jas 2:17); except maybe one thing: works without faith. I do not think Paul had management issues in his head when he preached at the Areopagus. Management and resources are important – but the really essential questions, the questions that determine everything else in our life as Christians, are these: Do I really know God? Do I really love him? Do I seek him out? Do I study his word? Do I listen for his voice? Do I give my heart to him? Do I really believe he's there?" I felt joy and peace.
One wonders why the shepherds heard and saw the angels and heavenly host on the first Christmas. I have heard of many reasons but this morning, when I read in the Gospel of Luke;”The shepherds were in their fields at night keeping watch over the sheep", the word “watch” struck me.
I imagine that the noise and the hustle of the city during the census left most of the inhabitants too busy to hear or see God.
The Shepherds, on the other hand were keeping watch. The lives of the shepherds were simple. The shepherds were in a place where they could see and hear God’s voice through the angels. This Christmas, one may ask the question, are we in that place?
Keeping things simple at Christmas time can be a challenge. I pray that the activities of the season and anxieties of this world would not distract us from hearing the voice of the angels say to each one of us, personally,..”Do not be afraid…Today in the town of David a savior has been born to YOU, he is Christ” Luke
God came to us as a little Baby, small, vulnerable and pure.

Don't Quote Me

"Entrust yourself entirely to God. He was confident even when he saw that people did not accept him. For 30 years in Nazereth they knew Him only as the son of Joseph and Mary. Our Lady and Joseph too must have wondered. People told Him that He was mad, a liar, they slapped Him, spat at Him crucified Him. He seemed to be a complete failure. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set.
13So Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
__________________________________________
Moses and the people of Israel were in a battle. As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Isreal had the better of the fight. But even Moses could not do this alone. Moses needed the help of the community (Aron and Hur) to support him. We too are in a battle and without community to support us we can not have the victory. Lifes battles can be exhausting and we like Moses need to do more than just believe that our help is in the Lord. This reading is a great reminder that we need to surround ourselves with others who share our faith and whom can we can depend on for help when we are weary. The leaves are turning, changing falling. I have often reflected on how beautiful the leaves are just before they die. I wonder if that is how it is suppose to be for all of us or at least all of us who believe. When we reflect on the death of Jesus on the cross it is easy to see only the gruesomeness and horror of sin and death. How sad it is that this is the only thing some see, when they look at the cross. Others see Christ and His love for us and some see both. The paradox of the cross, that it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Change
Leaves falling in beautiful golds and reds,
Dying
While we give thanks for life
And reap the harvest;
Beautiful, mystical fall.

Suffering

" Suffering is healing. "Just think how nice it will be to look at it when you are all grown up and say, 'There's Jennifer, she's a lawyer,' or 'That's Michael, He's a doctor.' A small voice at the back of the room rang out, "And there's the teacher, she's dead." Kids are so funny. The teacher must have laughed her socks off.
Goethe is known for saying that "Life is the childhood of our immortality" but I am not sure how many of us live like we believe that. On the day after 9/11 the churches were filled with people who believed it. I hope this lent helps us to do the same but in a spirit of joy and not sorrow.
I am referring to the Joy of knowing that because of Jesus Christ crucified and Risen from the dead, there is hope for us all and best of all, for the faithful, there are the rewards of eternal life. How do we find His light?
I was reminded today that meditating on the scriptures everyday is an essential part of living in the light of Christ. For me this has always been true. The days are literally getting brighter as we approach springtime. I see this as an invitation to contemplate Jesus the light of the world. His light warms the earth so that it can bear its fruit in due time. Sooner than we think the springtime sun will melt the snow and frost away and we will see the crocus flowers appear. I pray we all may experience His light, the light of God's Son, in a way that will warm our hearts, melting the frost of winter away so we can radiate His Love and Hope in all that we do.
